Brucella abortus causes brucellosis—a flu-like illness that can turn into recurring fevers, joint pain, and fatigue that lasts for years. Inhaled in an aerosol, it's a weapon. Labs working with it require Biosafety Level 3 containment. These students were in a BSL-1 teaching lab with open benches and no respirators.

The 32 students were immediately put on a 21-day course of doxycycline and rifampin. Side effects? Nasty. Sun sensitivity, nausea, potential liver damage. But the alternative—a latent infection that could reactivate months later—was worse.

Who’s to Blame?

The university has not named the lab coordinator or the supplier of the samples. But the incident echoes the 2014 CDC anthrax exposure, where live Bacillus anthracis was shipped from a high-security lab to a lower-level facility. That time, 84 people needed antibiotics. This time, it's only 32—but the pattern is identical: a breakdown in chain-of-custody protocols.

“The question isn’t how one vial got mislabeled,” said Dr. Elena Torres, a biosafety expert at Johns Hopkins. “It’s how the system allowed that mislabeling to go undetected for the entire chain—from the stockroom to the lab bench.”
